Türkan Oya Ekmekçi makes extensive use of research, record keeping and discovery in her works. In her series “Fossils”, she brings together the two disciplinary relationships between architecture and painting and her personal artistic intuition, and embarks on an experimental drawing research on a two-dimensional paper surface. While drawing rigid and sharp lines on the surface with technical drawings and sketches, on the other hand, she creates a ritualistic stain between soft transitions and dense hard traces by giving possibility to the randomness of the sketch. This meditative and performative search for stains on the surface of the paper, called fossil traces, excavates the past and reveals the traces. The “Fossils” series goes to the core of existence, to the id, and brings the most secret desires and silent discoveries to the surface in a meditative drawing. Concepts such as the past, history, intuition, mind and nature are transformed from a two-dimensional surface into words and traces with the viewer as a lasting story of a fleeting time.
