At Montag Residency, we are developing an ongoing research process around the idea of theĀ āComm-Unity GardenāĀ ā a space where ecology, artistic practice, and collective learning come together.
This research has grown through encounters across different contexts ā fromĀ Tulla Urban FarmingĀ in Tirana toĀ Islington MillĀ in Manchester, as well as through local observations and community-based practices in Turkey.
Through these experiences, we began to see gardens not only as sites of cultivation, but asĀ spaces of connection, resistance, and shared knowledge.
This open call emerges from an ongoing dialogue with Helen McGhie.
We are expanding her question to a wider community:
‘Have you come across any city-based āurban artist gardensā outside the UK?’
Ā
We are especially interested in:
⢠Gardens that are at risk due to redevelopment
⢠Artist-led or community-driven initiatives
⢠How photography and visual practices can connect people within these spaces
At Montag Residency, we approach photography not only as documentation, but as aĀ participatory and relational toolĀ ā a way to engage communities, build dialogue, and make visible processes of transformation.
By contributing, you become part of a growing network and shared research process. Selected contributions may be included in:
⢠an online gathering (with Helen McGhie & Antony Hall,  Elmas Deniz)
⢠future publications or mapping projects
⢠collaborative exchanges with Montag Residency
š± We invite artists, researchers, collectives, gardeners, and local initiatives to share their knowledge, experiences, and references.
